FIRE CODE REGULATIONS

When planning events or setting up decorations in ballrooms, meeting rooms, or outdoor spaces, please follow these safety rules:

• Clear paths to exits: If you’re not right next to an exit, there must be clear, easy-to-follow pathways that lead directly to an exit at all times.
• At least two exits: Every space must have at least two different ways to exit so people can leave safely in an emergency.
• Keep aisles wide and clear: Walkways (aisles) must be at least as wide as the exit doors they lead to. Nothing can be set up in front of exit doors.
• No blocking exits: Exits must always be completely clear and ready to use instantly. Do not block them with furniture, decorations, or equipment.
• Don’t hide exits: Decorations, curtains, or objects should never cover, block, or make it hard to see or get to an exit.
• No covering exit doors: Curtains or drapes cannot be placed over exit doors or in a way that hides them.
• No confusing mirrors: Mirrors cannot be placed on or near exit doors if they might confuse people trying to find the way out.
• No open flames: Candles or other open flames are not allowed indoors unless special permission is given by the Fire Marshal (and strict safety rules are followed).
• Fire-resistant materials required: All decorations, furniture, and stage setups must be treated to resist fire, and proof (certificate) must be provided.
• Approval for large setups: Big or complex event setups must be approved by local fire officials before the event.
• Spacing between tables: There must be enough space between tables for people to move safely:
  • Add at least 19 inches if chairs are on one side
  • Add at least 38 inches if chairs are on both sides

1. Guest Safety

At Wailea Beach Resort, your safety is our first concern. Resort staff are on property and available to you 24 hours a day. If you need anything or have any questions, please call the Hotel Operator at extension “0”.

2. Medical Emergency

Contact the Safety & Security Department 24 hours a day by calling the Hotel Operator at extension “0”. Safety & Security personnel have CPR and first aid certification. The County of Maui has a “911” emergency response system. Emergency Medical Personnel are stationed in Kihei. Maui County Fire Fighters also respond to medical calls from their Wailea Station. The Maui Memorial Medical Center is a hospital with 24 Hour Emergency Services, located at 221 Mahalani Street in Wailuku, 808-879-0123​.

3. Fire Protection and Response

All buildings contain a complete fire protection system that is monitored by the Safety & Security Department 24 hours a day. This system includes; a smoke detection system, a quick response sprinkler system activated by heat, manual alarm pull stations, dry chemical fire extinguishers, an audible alarm system in public areas and in each guest room, alarm strobe lights in public areas and designated guest rooms. In the event of a fire the Maui County Fire Department twill be responding. The nearest station is in Wailea.

It is important that guests know what to do in the event of a fire. When you arrive at the property please take a moment to become familiar with the locations of emergency exits and alarm pull stations. Evacuation maps are posted on the inside of each guest room door and at each elevator landing. Alarm pull stations are located at the stairwell doors and elevator landings on each floor. In the event of a fire, pull the alarm station closest to you.

4. Exiting the hotel in the event of a fire:

• Stairwells are located at the ends of the tower hallways.
• Take your room key. Do not attempt to bring all of your belongings.
• Test the door for heat or smoke before opening it.
• If the hallway is clear, exit by the nearest stairwell. Do not use the elevators. Meet at the top level of the parking structure for assistance and instructions.
• If your door feels warm or if the hallway is impassable
  • Close the door and place wet towels at the base of the door.
  • Keep the door’s safety swing latch “off” so that emergency personnel can open the door if necessary.
  • Turn off your air conditioner or heater to keep smoke from entering the room.
  • Call the Hotel Operator at extension “0” giving your name and room number.
  • Stay low to avoid inhaling smoke.
  • Listen for emergency personnel at the door, or calling from outside your lanai.

5.Tsunami

A tsunami (Japanese for "harbor waves") is a series of ocean waves produced by a sudden rise or fall in the earth's crust, most commonly caused by an earthquake or underwater landslide. Tsunami waves are hundreds of miles wide with a height of only a few feet. But as the waves approach the coast their height increases dramatically and can be very destructive when they reach the shore.

Tsunamis resulting from distant earthquakes and/or landslides in places like Chile, Alaska, and Japan and can arrive in Hawai’ian waters within hours. NOAA's Pacific TsunamiWarning Center has responsibility for tsunami monitoring and the subsequent issuance of any necessary watches or warnings for Hawai’i.

The Hawai'i State EmergencyAlert System is used to notify the public of a possible approaching tsunami. Some areas of the Island contain tsunami sirens. Turn on the nearest radio or television and listen for emergency information and instructions. The tsunami sirens are tested midday on the first workday of each month. When the Maui Emergency Management Agency (County Civil Defense) opens shelters it will be announced on this system.

Locally generated tsunamis resulting from earthquakes or landslides within the Hawai’ian Islands can arrive at the coast within minutes, even before a warning can be issued. If you are near the shore and feel the ground shake move inland to higher ground immediately.

Provided there is no earthquake damage, the tower floor two and higher should provide safe shelter. Aulani Ballroom is on the lobby level and will be used as a meeting point and information center.

6. Earthquake

Earthquakes are unpredictable and strike without warning. They can range in intensity from slight tremors to great shocks, and can last from a few seconds to as long as five minutes. Most casualties result from falling objects and debris, splintering glass, and fires.

Specific guidelines during an earthquake:

• Stay where you are. If outdoors, stay outdoors. If indoors, stay indoors. Most injuries occur as people are entering or leaving buildings.
• If the earthquake strikes when you are indoors, take cover under a desk, or table, or against inside walls or doorways. Stay away from glass, windows, and outside doors.
• If the earthquake catches you outside, move away from buildings and utility wires. Once in the open, stay there until shaking stops.
• Don’t run through or near buildings. The greatest danger from falling debris is just outside doorways and close to outer walls.

After an earthquake:

• Security staff will check for injuries. Do not attempt to move seriously injured persons unless they are in immediate danger.
• Local earthquakes can trigger tsunamis with little warning. Be prepared to move inland or to higher ground.
• Resort staff will advise you if buildings are safe to re-enter. Stay out of severely damaged buildings as aftershocks can cause addition damage. Be prepared for additional earthquake aftershock.
• Meet at the Mei Court for assistance and instructions. If Aulani Ballroom is safe it will be used as a meeting / information area.

7. Power Outage

The disruption of utility service may be a factor in several types of emergency situations or an intermittent outage may present an emergency itself depending on the circumstances. Wailea Beach Marriott Resort and Spa has an emergency back-up generator and power distribution system to provide power to essential components of the resort in the event of a power outage. This includes hallway lighting and elevators. The generator is tested regularly and comes on automatically during a power interruption. Each guest room has a flashlight mounted on the wall in the closet near the door.

8. Hurricane

Guests who are unable to leave the Island prior to landfall of a hurricane will be sheltered at the property. The Aulani Ballroom will be used for lower intensity events. Inner service area rooms and inner hallways will be used for higher intensity events.

Medical Clinics & Pharmacies

Please dial "911" in the event of an emergency. Maui Memorial Medical Center offers complete hospital and emergency services is located 19 miles (approximately 35 minutes) from the hotel property. The doctors on call can administer emergency care, with assistance from ambulance services via Maui Memorial.
